It Is Almost Never the Furnace
If the upstairs never warms up, the floors are cold, the bills keep climbing and there are icicles hanging off the eaves every February, the problem usually is not your heating system. It is that the warm air you are paying for is leaking out, and cold air is coming in to replace it.
Fiberglass batts slow heat down. They do not stop air. After thirty or forty years in a Maine attic they sag, settle and hold moisture, and the gaps around wiring, plumbing and rim joists were never sealed to begin with.
Spray foam expands into every one of those gaps and hardens. It insulates and air-seals in the same pass, and it does not settle, sag or lose R-value with age. Here is how the job actually goes.
